The design: 76 men with mild-to-moderate androgenetic alopecia were randomly assigned to take either 400 mg of pumpkin seed oil or a placebo daily, for 24 weeks, in a double-blind, placebo-controlled format — a reasonably rigorous design for a supplement trial.

The results: At 24 weeks, the pumpkin seed oil group showed a mean hair count increase of 40%, compared to a 10% increase in the placebo group — a statistically significant difference. Blinded investigator photo assessments and patient self-assessment scores also favored the pumpkin seed oil group. Reported side effects didn’t differ meaningfully between groups.
